The Japanese Lantern

The decorative panels on each side of the lantern are built using a Japanese style called Kumiko. Kumiko is built by making a grid-work of interlocking strips and then filling the grid with small hand-cut pieces with precisely trimmed angles on each end. There are many different patterns of Kumiko - this one is
called Asa no Ha. The panels are all made from maple with rice-paper backing, fitted into a solid walnut body.
